3rd New-ACE Workshop Report - Imperial College
The 3rd New-ACE workshop was held in London in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College, on 11 and 12 March 2009 and was hosted by Dr Simos Evangelou. 24 members registered for the workshop, and 20 of them attended. Also, two visitors, one from Imperial College and one from the University of Seville, Spain attended the workshop. In total six presentations took place, five with technical content and one with non-technical content. The technical presentations were all of excellent quality and four of them were presented by academics who are leading experts in their respective fields. The subjects presented included both theory and applications and involve the passive control of mechanical systems with the introduction of a new modelling element, the suppression of burst phenomena in two-wheeled road vehicles, active flow control turbochargers as a method to improve exhaust energy recovery and the design of nonlinear observers. The fifth speaker was from industry and presented the detailed plant modelling for vehicle control system development. The non-technical talk was given by a Japan Patent Office examiner who exposed the basic knowledge on patents and was very well received and aroused the interest of the audience as was evident by the large number of questions posed at the end of the talk. The workshop throughout had networking opportunities with the most targeted being the dinner, the poster session and the group discussions. The group sessions aimed to add momentum to ongoing discussions amongst the members with respect to potential collaborations and to enable newly joining members to voice their opinions. Overall the atmosphere was very positive and enabled proper cohesion of new members and continuity in the flow of ideas from past workshops.
