Report on the 4th New-Ace workshop (Loughborough University)
The 4th in a series of the NewAce workshops took place in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Loughborough University (University town of Loughborough, East Midlands), on 15-16 September 2009 and was hosted by Dr Argyrios Zolotas. 28 members registered for the workshop, and around 32 people participated (with an extra couple of members from Loughborough university as well as a couple of colleagues from nearby universities attending the IEEE lecture --a part of the workshop). The workshop comprised nine presentations, seven of these aimed towards technical content and the remaining two concentrated on non-technical content. The technical presentations were all by academics who are leading experts in the related fields. There was a variety of issues discussed in the presentations both from an analytical/theoretical point of view as well as practical applications. The technical subjects presented included active suspensions in the railway industry, networked controlled systems, multi-objective control and constraints, intelligent control of UAVs, building a research lab for flight control applications, logistics and supply chains, and sliding mode fault tolerant control. In particular, the presentation on networked controlled systems (Prof Antonios Tzes, visiting professor) was co-supported by the IEEE CSS UK&RI section. The first non-technical presentation was from EPSRC on supporting researchers, while the second one from Texas Instruments on their programmes of practical help for people in control systems. Networking opportunities existed throughout the workshop event, with the most integrated one being during the dinner session, but with more direct ones during the breaks and group discussions. The group discussion sessions were on general matters concerning research collaboration, with a couple of participants initiating future research proposals. Overall it was a rewarding experience for new members of the control community and an opportunity for further exploitation of ideas and collaboration.
